Poole’s iconic luxury boat builder, Sunseeker International, is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a Royal visit.

HRH The Earl of Wessex will be visiting Sunseeker’s manufacturing headquarters on Poole Quay on Tuesday 12th June. His Royal Highness will be in Poole as part of his commitments to promote The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), the world’s leading youth achievement programme.

As a Trustee for the DofE and almost 30 years since achieving his own Gold Award; through a combination of DofE engagements, Real Tennis events and fundraising activities, His Royal Highness will enable a new generation of young people to start their DofE journey in the UK and abroad.

Sunseeker, which has a very successful apprenticeship programme that was recently awarded ‘Best Apprenticeship and Training Scheme’ at the International Boat Builder Awards, formally invited HRH The Earl of Wessex for a tour of the factory to see its award-winning boats being manufactured and to meet with its staff, including some of its 116 apprentices.

Following the tour, His Royal Highness will take to the water in a Sunseeker yacht and escorted across Poole Harbour for a formal dinner at Brownsea Castle, along with other local distinguished guests, including Sunseeker apprentice, Louis Castle.

Louis, now working as a Test and Commissioning Engineer for Sunseeker, will deliver a speech following his achievement of the Royal recognition – the coveted Queen’s Silver Medal. This annual, long-standing competition is facilitated by the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights and provides advanced personal development opportunities for marine apprentices.

CEO of Sunseeker International, Phil Popham said: “We are looking forward to welcoming HRH The Earl of Wessex to Sunseeker and to Poole, this is such a big occasion for the business and we are extremely proud he accepted our invitation.

“While he is here, we want to demonstrate the hard work we do as a business to promote economic growth through the world-class design, engineering and manufacture of more than 150 boats per year; we are proud to be a British manufacturing and exports success story.

“We’re delighted HRH The Earl of Wessex will have the opportunity to get out on the water on one of our yachts and to join guests for a dinner in aid of his fundraising goals. We would like to pass on our thanks to The John Lewis Partnership for their generosity in allowing us to host that dinner in such a remarkable location.”

Louis Castle added: “I am thrilled to have been invited to meet with HRH The Earl of Wessex and to share my story of the Queen’s Silver Medal. Sunseeker’s apprenticeship programme has been a huge stepping stone for me; it has supported me in developing vital skills required for the delivery of these incredible yachts.”
